Meet the team at either of the designated pick up points or in Bowness-on-Solway.
We will then head to our first B&B in Carlisle to rest, ready for an early start the following day.
Starting out at Bowness on Solway, we walk alongside a quiet road overlooking the Solway Firth, (designated an 'area of outstanding natural beauty'), via the village of Burgh by Sands to the River Eden, as it winds into the city of Carlisle.
The walk will take us back to the B&B in Carlisle where you will have free time to explore at your leisure.
Carlisle is famous for its great medieval fortress that has watched over the city for over nine centuries. Explore its ancient chambers, stairways, and dungeons where you will discover the infamous 'licking stones'.
The River Eden remains a prominent feature at the start of today's walk as we leave Carlisle City Centre. Once outside of city, we will pass over the M6 Motorway and it’s from here that we will start our journey in earnest, on the wilder side of Hadrian’s Wall Trail.
Much of this walk runs through what is now private farmland. You’re constantly going in, out and over fences and gates to follow the path, meaning we will encounter many farm animals along the way.
Today is filled with Roman landmarks.
A few miles from Banks is Birdoswald, and the longest continuous stretch of wall. After Birdoswald we pass through the peaceful village of Gilsland before approaching the edge of the neighbouring village of Greenhead – the gateway to Northumberland National Park.
Spot turrets, mile castles, two well-preserved forts and a substantial section of the wall, before ascending Winshields Crag, the highest point on the route, to admire fantastic views across the surrounding countryside. Finally, we end the day in the quiet hamlet of Once Brewed, where we will settle into our B&B for the night.
Prepare yourself for the most iconic section of the wall – Steel Rigg and Sycamore Gap. Steel Rigg offers breathtaking vistas, over the striking Peel Crags to Crag Lough, with the Wall cresting above them. A mile along Peel Crags will bring us to one of the most iconic places on Hadrian’s Wall, Sycamore Gap, famously used as a location for numerous films, including Robin Hood.
We will then have the chance to take in even more stunning views from Sewingshields Crags, before walking alongside the Roman military road to Brocolitia Fort (home to the striking Temple of Mithras) and Carraw.
The day starts with a pleasant stroll into Chollerford and then it’s a surprisingly enjoyable walk over Accomb Fell beside the old Roman road to East Wallhouses.
The trail passes alongside the military road, before heading through Heddon on the Wall down to the River Tyne, as you walk into the outskirts of Newcastle to the suburb of Newburn.
Quite a contrast for this final stage of the trail as we walk alongside the River Tyne beneath Newcastle’s famous bridges and eye-catching architecture, to reach the end of the wall at Segendum Fort.
After arriving in Wallsend we will enjoy an afternoon meal before departing back to our drop off points.
