Trek Into History

Machu Picchu is a new Seven Wonder of The World and is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. Sitting above the Urubamba River valley, it was built in the 15th century but later abandoned. It is a sacred place that was used by the Incas to worship their gods.

It is common for people to hike the famous Inca trail to get to Machu Picchu. This typically takes four days; half a million visit every year making it Peru’s most popular attraction.

There are various choices depending on how much trekking you would like to do. The easy option: take the train from Cusco then a bus to the ruin’s entrance. The classic option: hike the 26-mile Inca Trail (which will take you 3-4 days.)

Altitude sickness is nothing to do with physical fitness but rather the amount of oxygen in the air. Sitting at 7,972 ft about sea level, Machu Picchu takes some adjustment. The best way to avoid any problems is to give yourself plenty of time – arrive the day before you want to do anything.

Affectionately titled ‘The Mountain of Death’, this incredibly steep climb sits behind the Machu Picchu ruins. It is highly popular due to the fantastic view it offers of the Machu Picchu site. Tickets go fast so be organised and book them before.
