Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ that towers 2,310 feet above the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Crafted between 1922-1931, this statue is the largest art deco-style sculpture in the world. It has fascinated historians, experts and tourists for almost a hundred years. It is classed as one of the new Seven wonders of the World and is perched on the summit of Mount Corcovado.
Whether you’re religious or not, the Christ the Redeemer is a wondrous sight to behold. The sheer size of this monument is hard to comprehend without visiting it. The outstretched arms alone span a huge 92 feet!
Rio de Janeiro is a bustling, lively place that has a lot to offer the people of the world, no matter whether you’re a frequent visitor or there for the very first time.
After the First World War, there was a worry about a lack of religious faith in Brazil. The hope was that by putting a big statue of Christ overlooking the city, it’s people would be constantly reminded of God’s presence and find reassurance in its appearance.
The monument was actually put together on top of the mountain. All the pieces were carted up there on a small, cog-wheel train and the workers used long poles to act as scaffolding during its construction. It was no small feat and a true testament to the people of Rio’s faith.
