You'll be collected from your chosen pick-up point and transferred to Penrith. 'The gateway to the Northern Lakes', the town is renowned for its historic landmarks, most notably, the striking 14th-century castle, and after checking in to your B&B, you will have the remainder of the day to explore as you please.
After breakfast, we'll drive to the coastal town of Whitehaven where we'll commence the challenge. Heading east along walled country lanes, you'll enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery the Lake District has to offer: lush fields, backed by stunning panoramas of the rugged fells, dense forests, and quaint hamlets. We'll face our first serious test as we make the steep ascent into Whinlatter forest, before stopping at the visitor centre for a bite to eat and a hot drink. After a rapid descent into Keswick, we'll spend the afternoon traversing winding quiet lanes, disused railways, and country roads, before we reach our B&B in Penrith in the evening.
After a hearty breakfast, we head on to the Pennines. We'll pass the River Eden and Langwathby, then begin our ascent to Hartside Pass, climbing for 3-4 miles before enjoying a freewheeling descent towards the charming village of Alston. From Alston it's on to Nenthead (one of the most challenging parts of the route) then on to the highest point of C2C route, as we cross into Northumberland, descending, then climbing gradually again before we make our final descent into the village of Allenheads, our destination for the night.
Our final day begins with a steep ascent from the village as we climb through the valley head into open moorland where we'll make a long liberating descent into the village of Rookhope. We'll then ascend to 'Waskerley Way', and there, enjoy a brief stop at the cyclist's cafe housed in a former miners railway station. We'll head on following the disused railway line through open moorland, before making the descent towards Consett. Passing the town, we'll meet Derwent Walk, another disused railway line, that will take us through to Newcastle. Following the Tyne, we'll enjoy striking views of the city and it's iconic bridge, before heading on through Wallsend and North Shields, past a marina, and on, alongside the Tyne for our final stretch to the North Sea. After one final, short climb, we'll ascend into Tynemouth, reaching our final destination, the town's scenic bay, where we'll relish in the sense of achievement as we enjoy views of Tynemouth Castle and Priory on the headland above, along with panoramic vistas of the open sea. You'll enjoy a hard-earned victory meal and receive your well-deserved medals, before departing to your designated drop off point.
