Record numbers apply for 2025 London Marathon!
A record-breaking number of applicants have poured in for the 2025 London Marathon! According to event organizers, over 840,000 people have applied, shattering last year's record of 578,000!
Of these applications, 672,631 hail from the UK, with a near-even split between genders: 50.33% from men, 49.03% from women, and 0.64% from non-binary applicants. Additionally, 167,687 non-UK residents applied through the international ballot.
This year, over 53,000 participants conquered the 26.2-mile course across the capital, breaking 44 Guinness World Records and raising an impressive £67m for charity!
Hugh Brasher, the event director for the TCS London Marathon, expressed astonishment at the figures. "This is an absolutely phenomenal total" he said.
"Furthermore, the increase in applications from women, up from around 43% last year to 49% this year, is exceptional and takes us close to parity for applications from men and women for the first time."
So, how many lucky folks will get the chance to take on this iconic challenge? Well if this year's marathon is anything to go by then around 53,700, but that figure includes those who secured spots by running for a charity or met qualifying time standards. The 2025 ballot results, the marathon equivalent of a grand lottery, will drop in July via email, keeping hopefuls everywhere on their toes!
