According to an official statement Iceland are hoping to ease restrictions on international arrivals “no later than 15 June 2020, while from 15 May some professionals arriving in Iceland including scientists, filmmakers and athletes will be eligible for a modified quarantine.”

The precise details have not been ironed out yet but it’s looking probable that the government will have visitors tested for COVID-19 on arrival.

There is also an app that helps track people which could be useful in isolating those who have been in proximity to somebody infected and slow down the rate of infection.

40% of the public in Iceland are already using the tracing app.

Those who like to keep their information private need not worry, as privacy measures are put in place and the info is only ever used in light of someone contracting the virus. These measures have given the Icelandic government reason to be cautiously optimistic.

Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir, minister of Tourism, Industry and Innovation went on record to say:

"When travellers return to Iceland we want to have all mechanisms in place to safeguard them and the progress made in controlling the pandemic. Iceland's strategy of large-scale testing, tracing and isolating have proven effective so far.

We want to build on that experience of creating a safe place for those who want a change of scenery after what has been a tough spring for all of us.”
