Australia to reopen borders to international travel for the first time in nearly two years

Australia has announced it will reopen its borders to vaccinated tourists and other visa holders for the first time since March 2020.

When the pandemic began, Australia's government put in place some of the strictest border controls in the world, effectively closing the country to all but a limited number of returning citizens.

As the majority of nations across the globe began relaxing travel rules for fully vaccinated visitors, Australia remained largely the same, with the admittance of some international students and skilled migrant workers (since December) one of the few concessions.

However, with conditions improving in the country, evidenced in a significant decline in Covid hospitalisations, the country's government is finally ready to open to tourists again.

From February 21, the country will permit entry to double vaccinated visitors (subject to proof of their vaccination status), marking the biggest relaxation of Covid travel rules for nearly two years!

"If you're double vaccinated, we look forward to welcoming you back!" Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday.

Travellers arriving from abroad to the majority of Australian states, may still be required to show proof of a negative PCR test, but the new regulations will be welcome news to British holidaymakers who prior to the pandemic travelled to the country in their droves!
