Malta is paying holidaymakers to visit!

In a bid to provide a vital boost to their tourism industry, Malta has launched a scheme that will pay tourists up to €200 towards their accommodation.

To be eligible for the compensation, holidaymakers must stay for a minimum of three nights at participating hotels, and the total figure they receive will depend on the ranking of the accommodation, with guests of 5-star properties receiving the full €200, and guests of 4 and 3-star properties receiving €150 and €100 respectively.

In addition, visitors who stay on the neighbouring island of Gozo, (situated around 20 minutes by ferry from the main isle) will be eligible for an additional 10% discount off the total cost of their accommodation.

Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, between Sicily and North Africa, Malta is renowned for its picturesque coastal scenery and wealth of historic sites and landmarks and is a hugely popular tourist destination, attracting millions of international visitors every year.

The tourism industry is central to the Maltese economy and the pandemic has had a devastating impact, with visitor numbers down by over 80% in 2020, compared to the previous 12 months.

However, the Maltese government is hoping that this scheme will benefit 35,000 travellers, giving the industry a much-needed kickstart in the process.

The scheme could be particularly good news for vaccinated British tourists, who the Maltese government recently announced would be welcomed back to the island from June 1 (without having to provide a negative covid test).

Although non-essential international travel is currently banned under the UK's Covid restrictions, this is expected to change in late May and replaced with a traffic light system in which countries will be classified as either red, amber, or green.

Brits returning from green list countries won't have to quarantine, and though we don't know as yet which destinations will be included, thanks to its hugely successful vaccine rollout, Malta is looking like a prime candidate!
